The RPL Homeschool Theatre Production Program provides full theatre production opportunities for homeschooled kids of all ages. The RPL Homeschool Theatre Program is open to all RPL Members. Read about Membership, here.
Audition Info: Auditions for the spring Musical are Monday April 25 at Read Play Love, starting at 1:00pm. In-person auditions are preferred, as it helps us get to know the kids and also offers a more empowering and confidence-inducing experience for the kids, but we also accept video auditions.
Audition Suggestions: Auditions are 15 minute slots, consisting of a song and a short reading, both of which are prepared ahead of time. Our preference is a song from the show (or even just a part of one) but that is not required. Download the Audition Pack Here!
MP3s of the songs (note: there are non-singing roles for those who prefer to act only and not sing)
Character descriptions and suggested audition songs for each
A selection of short readings from which to choose
Stage Crew: We also need kids for stage crew! During rehearsals, stage crew kids will built props and sets and help prepare the backstage area, lights, and sound for the production. During the shows, the crew will work backstage to run set changes and other tasks. This is a great opportunity to be involved with an awesome community if kids aren't necessarily interested in performing.
We are producing two versions of the show: a Mainstage Production and a Juniors version. ***Runtime the Mainstage show will be 90 minutes max for Mainstage, 45 min max for the Juniors. **
The show has been adapted kid-friendly (if you are familiar with the original Broadway musical, we will be focusing mainly on the content from ACT I, which circumvents the more adult themes, the darker plot twists, and also creates a manageable show length) and our mission, as always, is to nurture creative discovery, boost confidence through collaboration and creative empowering and inspiring performance experiences for kids of all ages. If you are not familiar with the show, I suggest downloading the audition pack below to listen to the versions of the songs included here, rather than watching or listening to the original Broadway production or the recent film.
Our Juniors production is further abbreviated for kids who are younger and those who would benefit from shorter rehearsal time and a shorter length show with potentially more showcase opportunities to have their moment to be in lead roles! This offers these homeschool kids a unique opportunity not typically available to young kiddos.
There are definitely roles for all ages in the Mainstage show, so your family has the option of auditioning for the Mainstage show, or the Jr. show, or even for both. Your decision can be based on rehearsal schedule (see below) or on your family’s preference, as both experiences offer great benefits to the kids. If you don't have a preference, you can let us know that you would be happy for us to cast whenever we think is best. If you have any questions, you are welcomed to reach out to us with your questions.
Production Dates and Details
Both shows rehearse for six weeks. However, most scenes only have a few characters, so rehearsal schedule can really be delineated effectively, especially if at-home rehearsal is encouraged. Commitment wise, the good news is that for most characters, actors will only be called once a week until beginning of June when we do some final rehearsals before performances. If you have a day preference (M or F) you can indicate that at the audition and I will take that into account when casting.
Rehearsals runMay 2 – June 15 Junior rehearsals – 1:00-2:00 pm ( M or F) Mainstage Rehearsals 3:00-5:00 pm ( M or F)
(We’re also allowing for some flexibility here for those who need to meet earlier or later, we should be able to work that out as well.)
Mainstage performances: Fri/June 17 (7pm), Sat/June 18 (7pm), Sun/ June 19 (2pm), Mon/June 20 (3pm) Juniors performances: June 25 and 26, both matinees at 2pm
* All kids participating in the RPL Homeschool Theatre Program are current RPL Members. Monthly dues are still just $30/month for one child, and now for those with more than one child, $60/month covers the entire family—unlimited classes and kids! Read details about Read Play Love Membership below.
* There is a one time production fee of $30/child.
* Costume costs are the responsibility of parents, and vary per role, but parents work together to decide and make everything as easy and most importantly, cost-effective as possible, often using shared, donated, or secondhand materials to keep costs minimum.
Above all, this is a 100% a volunteer effort, with all the parents work together to support the production, volunteering in a variety of capacities. This allows us to put on the shows for much less than it costs parents elsewhere since these productions truly are collaborative efforts from the whole community!
